Summary

  • "The Trump administration is reported to have judged Nvidia's AI semiconductors attempt to export to China a national security threat and blocked it."
  • "It reported that Nvidia's Chinese market entry was thwarted by concerns from U.S. senators and other senior officials."
  • "It said the move could lead to the U.S. strengthening advanced semiconductor export controls against China and intensifying technological competition."

The U.S. Trump administration is reported to have blocked Nvidia's (Nvidia) attempt to export artificial intelligence (AI) semiconductors to China.

On the 3rd (local time), The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported, citing multiple sources, that "Trump administration officials judged Nvidia's push to export to China a national security threat and blocked it."

According to the report, U.S. senior officials, including Republican Senator Marco Rubio, raised concerns that "sales of Nvidia's AI chips could strengthen China's artificial intelligence capabilities and contribute to the development of military and intelligence technologies."

Nvidia's Jensen Huang, chief executive officer (CEO), is reported to have contacted government officials and attempted to persuade them to maintain access to the Chinese market. However, the Trump administration has maintained a negative stance toward exporting AI chips to China, citing technology transfer and semiconductor supply-chain security.

The move aligns with the U.S. policy of tightening controls on advanced semiconductor exports to China, and it raises the possibility that technological competition between the two countries could intensify further.
