A co-developer of the Bitcoin (BTC) privacy wallet 'Samourai Wallet' has been sentenced to prison on charges of unauthorized money transfers.
On the 6th (local time), according to crypto-focused media CoinDesk, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York sentenced Samourai Wallet co-developer Kion Rodriguez to 5 years in prison. This is the maximum statutory sentence.
U.S. federal prosecutors argued that Samourai Wallet was used to launder illegal funds amounting to about $237 million. The service's Bitcoin mixing feature makes transaction routes difficult to trace, and it has been pointed out that it was used for movements of funds by criminal organizations and on the dark web.
The sentencing of another co-defendant, William Lonergan Hill, is scheduled to be held on the 7th (local time).
