Summary
- Buterin warned that quantum computers could threaten Elliptic Curve Cryptography, the basis of Ethereum's security, within 3 years.
- He said Ethereum needs to upgrade to quantum-resistant cryptography within the next 4 years.
- He also emphasized the importance of ongoing innovation in the Ethereum Layer-2 network, wallets, privacy tools, and the surrounding ecosystem.

On the 19th (local time), DL News reported that Buterin attended the 'Devconnect' conference held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on the previous day (18th) and said, "'Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC)' will disappear." Elliptic curve cryptography is a security technology that uses specific points and operations on an elliptic curve to generate public and private keys. Both Bitcoin and Ethereum use elliptic curve cryptography as the foundational technology of their security models.
Buterin predicted that quantum computers could threaten elliptic curve cryptography within the next 3 years. He said, "Quantum computing could neutralize Ethereum's core security model before 2028," and "Ethereum must be upgraded to quantum-resistant cryptography within the next 4 years."
He also emphasized the importance of Ethereum Layer-2 networks. Buterin said, "The goal is not to stifle innovation but to reorient innovation from Layer 1 to the surrounding ecosystem," and added, "It is healthy for attention to shift from Layer 1 to the periphery of the ecosystem." This is interpreted to mean that innovation should continue in Ethereum Layer-2 blockchains, wallets, privacy tools, and other surrounding areas.
