U.S. September nonfarm payrolls 119,000…far exceed expectations

Last month, U.S. employment figures greatly exceeded market expectations.

The U.S. Department of Labor said on the 20th (local time) that nonfarm payroll employment increased by 119,000 in September from the previous month. This figure is more than double the market forecast (53,000). Compared with the revised August figure (-4,000), it is 123,000 higher.

The September unemployment rate was 4.4%, 0.1% percentage point above experts' expectations (4.3%). Compared with the August unemployment rate (4.3%), it rose by 0.1% percentage point.

Average hourly earnings in September increased 3.8% year-on-year. It exceeded the forecast (3.7%) by 0.2% percentage point.

Month-on-month, it rose 0.2%, falling 0.1% percentage point short of the forecast (0.3%). Average hourly earnings are an indicator to glimpse wage inflation.
