Summary

  • More than 65 virtual asset groups submitted a letter asking President Trump to urge the Treasury Department and the IRS to establish virtual asset tax guidelines.
  • The groups said they requested clear rules on the treatment of staking and mining rewards and the presentation of DeFi regulatory guidelines.
  • The letter emphasized that unclear regulation causes weakened innovation and global competitiveness, stressing that clarity in U.S. digital asset policy is urgent.

More than 65 virtual asset (cryptocurrency) groups, including the Solana Policy Institute (Solana Policy Institute), submitted a joint letter to President Trump asking that the Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) promptly establish tax guidelines for virtual assets.

On the 20th (local time), according to crypto-focused media The Block, the groups said in the letter, "A cryptocurrency policy roadmap, including White House recommendations, is already in place," and emphasized, "Now each government agency must take concrete steps to solidify U.S. leadership in the digital asset sector."

The virtual asset coalition demanded that the IRS prepare guidance on the application of minimum tax rates for virtual asset transactions. It also urged the Treasury Department to provide clear rules on the treatment of staking and mining rewards. To date, taxation standards for staking rewards remain unclear, causing ongoing confusion in the industry.

Additionally, the groups requested clear regulatory guidelines that can protect the DeFi (decentralized finance) sector. The letter stated, "Unclear regulation not only hinders innovation but also leads to weakened global competitiveness," and "Clear policies are needed so the United States does not fall behind in the digital asset competition."
