Summary
- Ripple said it plans to operate the RLUSD stablecoin on Ethereum L2 blockchains such as Optimism, Base, Ink, and Unichain on a test basis.
- The expansion will use the token transfer technology of the cross-chain protocol Wormhole, enabling RLUSD to move between blockchains without separate wrapping.
- Ripple emphasized regulatory management and expanded use in DeFi environments, saying RLUSD's adoption of Ethereum L2s will set a standard that combines on-chain efficiency with compliance.

Ripple is expanding its dollar-pegged stablecoin RLUSD to Ethereum layer-2 (L2) networks, formalizing its multi-chain strategy.
On the 15th, crypto-focused media outlet CoinDesk reported that Ripple plans to operate RLUSD on an experimental basis on Ethereum L2 blockchains such as Optimism, Coinbase's Base, Kraken's Ink, and Uniswap's Unichain. A public launch is expected next year pending regulatory approval from the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS).
This expansion will apply the native token transfer technology of the cross-chain protocol Wormhole. As a result, RLUSD will be able to move between blockchains without being converted into a separate wrapped token or a synthetic asset. Ripple said this will simplify the asset structure while maintaining regulatory oversight and expand its use within DeFi environments.
RLUSD is currently issued on Ethereum and the XRP Ledger and is operated under a NYDFS trust license. Ripple recently secured preliminary approval from the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for a federal trust bank charter.
Jack McDonald, Ripple's Senior Vice President for stablecoins, said, "Stablecoins are the gateway to DeFi and institutional adoption," and added, "By launching RLUSD on Ethereum L2 networks, we will set a standard that combines regulatory compliance with on-chain efficiency."
