U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has appointed former UK Chancellor George Osborne as chair of its internal advisory board.
According to Reuters on the 18th (local time), Coinbase announced that it had appointed former Chancellor Osborne as chair of the advisory board. Earlier, Coinbase had hired Osborne as an adviser in January 2024.
Osborne plans to serve as advisory board chair in the UK rather than the United States. Faryar Shirzad (Faryar Shirzad), Coinbase's Chief Policy Officer, told Reuters, "Coinbase now seeks to expand its influence on policy decisions outside the United States, particularly in the UK and the European Union (EU)," adding, "(Osborne) will play a more active role in working with policymakers around the world."
Meanwhile, Osborne served as the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer from 2010 to 2016. OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, recently hired Osborne as part of its overseas data center expansion strategy.
Osborne said, "As (Coinbase) advisory board chair, I will have the opportunity to learn more about the revolution that blockchain, stablecoins, and tokenization will bring to the financial system."
