The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has appointed an official with experience overseeing Bitcoin (BTC) futures contracts as Chief of Staff.

On the 31st (local time), according to The Block, a media outlet specializing in virtual assets (cryptocurrency), CFTC Chairman Michael Selig appointed Amir Zaidi as Chief of Staff.

Zaidi worked at the CFTC from 2010 to 2019, handling regulation of commodity derivatives including oversight of Bitcoin futures contracts. He is known to have been the person responsible for practical work in the early stages of integrating virtual asset-related derivatives into the institutional framework.

Chairman Selig said, "At a time when Congress is preparing to submit the virtual assets market structure bill (CLARITY Act) to the President, Zaidi will play an important role in designing regulations that fit the rapidly changing commodities market environment."

The appointment is notable in that it was made as discussions over the regulatory framework for virtual asset derivatives and an expanded role for the CFTC are getting underway.
