Ilya Lichtenstein (Ilya Dutch Lichtenstein), identified as the main perpetrator of the 2016 Bitfinex hacking incident, has reportedly been released early after a sentence reduction.

On the 2nd (local time), according to crypto-focused media The Block, Lichtenstein received a sentence reduction under the First Step Act, which aims at the rehabilitation and reintegration of federal inmates, resulting in his early release. He had been sentenced in November 2024 to 5 years in prison on charges of hacking Bitfinex and laundering stolen funds.

Lichtenstein is also known as the husband of rapper Heather Morgan. He pleaded guilty to stealing approximately $4.5 billion worth of bitcoin (BTC) from the Bitfinex exchange in 2016 and laundering it over a prolonged period.

The incident is recorded as one of the largest hacks in crypto history, and US authorities recovered a substantial amount of the stolen assets during the investigation.
