Multiple explosions and the sound of low-flying aircraft were reported in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.

On the 3rd (local time), according to AP, AFP and Reuters, at around 2 a.m. at least seven explosions and the sound of low-flying aircraft were heard in Caracas. A column of smoke was also observed, and residents were seen rushing into the streets across the city.

A blackout occurred in the southern area of Caracas near a military base. However, it is unclear whether the incident was a simple accident or the result of action by outside parties.

The Venezuelan government did not immediately respond to AP's request for comment.

Earlier, the administration of Donald Trump mentioned the possibility of a ground operation against Venezuela to press Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to step down. There were also recent reports that the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) struck a remote port pier on the Venezuelan coast.

The Trump administration has sunk a vessel suspected of being a drug-carrying ship off the coast of Venezuela, and has seized an oil tanker that violated international law.
