U.S. President Donald Trump said there is no need to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to the breaking news account Walter Bloomberg on the 9th (local time), Trump, responding to reporters’ questions, was asked whether the U.S. would “respond to Russia in the same way” in connection with its recent move to arrest Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and transfer him to the United States. Trump said he “doesn’t think it’s necessary to detain Putin.”

The remarks are interpreted as drawing a clear distinction between Maduro’s arrest and the situation involving Russia. Trump appears to have signaled that while the Venezuelan case involves a target indicted by U.S. judicial authorities on drug and corruption charges, the Russia-Ukraine war should be approached as a matter of diplomacy and national security.

Earlier, the United States was reported to be transferring President Maduro to New York after arresting him, triggering international repercussions. Russia and China had strongly protested.

Trump’s comments are being read as a signal that, unlike the hardline approach toward Venezuela, he prefers a solution for Russia centered on negotiations and pressure rather than arrest or direct physical measures.
