As U.S. President Donald Trump again signaled his intention to secure Greenland, Greenland’s political parties said on the 9th (local time) that they do not want to be ruled by the United States.

According to AFP, leaders of Greenland’s five parliamentary parties said in a statement that day, “We do not want to be Americans, nor do we want to be Danes,” adding, “We want to be Greenlanders.”

They added, “Greenland’s future must be decided by Greenlanders. No other country can intervene,” and stressed, “We must decide our country’s future ourselves—without being forced into hasty decisions, without delay, and without interference from other nations.”

The statement came after President Trump said he could not tolerate Greenland being occupied by “Russia or China,” and expressed his intention to secure the territory.

Speaking at an event at the White House in Washington, D.C., hosted for chief executives of gas companies, President Trump said of the Greenland issue, “I’d like to solve it easily through negotiations, but if that doesn’t work, we’ll do it the hard way.”
