Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, who founded U.S. cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, have donated $1.2 million to Zcash (ZEC).

Shielded Labs said on the 21st (local time) that it received a contribution of 3,221 Zcash from the Winklevoss twins, worth about $1.2 million at current prices. Shielded Labs is the developer behind Zcash.

The donation will be used for Zcash development. Shielded Labs explained, “The Winklevoss twins have long been backers who support Zcash’s mission,” adding, “They have consistently supported the Zcash ecosystem through Gemini.” It also noted, “Gemini was also the first among major exchanges to support Zcash withdrawals.”

Cameron Winklevoss, Gemini co-founder, said, “Strong privacy is an essential component of sound money,” explaining that this is “why we’ve supported Zcash for years.” He added, “Shielded Labs is doing very important work at the protocol level,” and said he is “happy to support (Shielded Labs’) efforts.”
