Summary

  • It was reported that one individual verified about $23 million in assets by publicly sharing their crypto wallet in real time during an online spat.
  • On-chain analyst ZachXBT said the wallet was linked to fund flows associated with the Bitfinex hack.
  • He said wallet tracing uncovered about $90 million in crypto-related criminal proceeds.

A person who was verifying their crypto (cryptocurrency) holdings during an online argument has been found to be tied to large-scale criminal funds.

According to on-chain analyst ZachXBT on the 23rd (local time), an individual using the name “John” publicly shared their crypto wallet in real time to flaunt the size of their assets while arguing with others online.

The individual livestreamed a transfer of about $6.7 million worth of Ethereum (ETH) and also exposed an Exodus wallet holding about $2.3 million in crypto. The amount of crypto they directly verified totaled $23 million.

After analyzing the disclosed conversation and on-chain data, ZachXBT confirmed that the wallets were linked to fund flows associated with the Bitfinex hack. Subsequent wallet tracing and analysis of the chain of connected addresses indicated that roughly $90 million in crypto-related criminal proceeds were uncovered.

ZachXBT said this was “a case where reckless verification of assets and wallet exposure online became a clue for tracing criminal funds.”
