U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 31st (local time) that his plan for Iran going forward is, first and foremost, dialogue.

In an interview with Fox News, Trump said, “The plan is for (Iran) to talk with us,” adding, “Let’s see if we can do something,” according to the reporter, who posted the remarks on X.

However, Trump also said, “We have a bigger fleet than we did with Venezuela,” adding, “We’ll see what happens.” The comments signaled the possibility of launching a military operation if talks with Iran collapse.

Asked about suggestions that mediation by countries around Iran, such as Türkiye and Saudi Arabia, is unlikely to succeed, Trump replied, “That’s true.” He added, “They’re negotiating, so we’ll be watching.”

Trump went on to say, “As you know, the last time they negotiated, we had to eliminate their nuclear [program], and it didn’t work,” adding, “We eliminated it in a different way.” The remark referred to the U.S. surprise strike on nuclear facilities in Iran last June using B-2 stealth bombers and other assets.
