In a post on X, Khamenei said on the 1st (local time) that “if the United States starts a war, it will escalate into a regional conflict.” The remarks are seen as reflecting heightened military tensions amid growing speculation about a possible U.S. strike on Iran.
The United States says it will seek talks with Iran first. In an interview with Fox News the previous day (31st), U.S. President Donald Trump said, “The plan is (for Iran) to talk to us,” adding, “Let’s see if we can do something.”
He also hinted at the possibility of armed intervention. Trump said, “We have a fleet bigger than we had for Venezuela,” adding, “We’ll see what happens.” The comments signaled the possibility of launching a military operation if negotiations with Iran collapse.
