Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has again mentioned Dogecoin (DOGE), reviving the long-running “to the moon” narrative. Market reaction, however, appears limited compared with the past.

According to crypto-focused media outlet CoinDesk on the 3rd, Musk replied “probably around next year” to a post on X (formerly Twitter) that referenced his previous remarks that SpaceX would “actually send Dogecoin to the Moon.” He made the additional comment after earlier responding briefly with “Yes.”

The remark came as a post from January 2021—when Musk said he would send Dogecoin to the Moon—was reshared. At the time, Musk’s comments helped trigger a sharp surge in Dogecoin’s price.

This time, however, the tone is different. Dogecoin showed no notable price move even after Musk’s comments and is currently trading below $0.11. That is down about 60% from a year earlier and roughly 90% below its 2021 peak.

Musk and his companies have a track record of limited real-world use of Dogecoin. Tesla and SpaceX have accepted Dogecoin for payments for some merchandise, and they have also been pursuing the “DOGE-1” satellite launch project, which is to be paid for entirely in Dogecoin.

The DOGE-1 mission, first announced in 2021, has been delayed multiple times, but the project itself remains alive after clearing regulatory procedures. It is seen as a symbolic case that is routinely cited whenever Dogecoin is mentioned as a real-world use case.

The outlet reported that “neither Musk nor SpaceX provided further details on what ‘next year’ specifically means or any new Dogecoin-related plans,” adding that “the remarks are interpreted as symbolic rather than a concrete business plan.”
