The possibility has been raised that the US federal government could enter another partial shutdown (temporary suspension of operations) this week.

According to BlockBeats, a cryptocurrency-focused media outlet, assessments suggest the risk of another shutdown is growing as Democrats and Republicans have failed to narrow their differences over an overhaul of the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policy. The US previously endured a 43-day federal government shutdown last fall, and as recently as just a week ago experienced a four-day short-term shutdown.

The most recent shutdown, which ran from the 31st of last month through the 3rd of this month, was brought to a close by a bipartisan spending deal. However, that agreement was only a temporary measure that provided just a two-week stopgap budget for the department overseeing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and discussions on institutional changes remain ongoing.

This stopgap budget is valid through Friday local time (the 13th). If negotiations are not concluded, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) would face a funding shortfall starting early Saturday morning. With no clear progress toward an agreement so far, political circles in Washington are once again preparing for a shutdown. That said, observers say it is likely to be a partial shutdown limited to DHS.

Meanwhile, prediction markets are placing high odds on a shutdown. According to the outlet, Kalshi put the probability of a US government shutdown this weekend at 65%, while Polymarket projected a higher 70%.
