Ethereum Foundation makes 'quantum resistance' a top priority this year… also pushing to raise the gas limit

The Ethereum Foundation will make strengthening resilience against quantum computers a top priority this year.

The foundation on the 18th (local time) unveiled its “2026 Protocol Priorities.” The core focus is reinforcing Ethereum Layer 1 around three pillars: security, censorship resistance, and network resilience.

First, as part of a US$1 trillion security project, the Ethereum Foundation is pushing to strengthen quantum resistance. There is also speculation that measures related to quantum-computing readiness could be included in the two Ethereum mainnet upgrades scheduled for this year.

To address quantum computing, the foundation last month set up a dedicated post-quantum computing (PQ) team. The foundation said it is “pursuing security hardening efforts, including preparations for a ‘post-quantum’ era.”

It is also pushing to raise the gas limit. The gas limit is the maximum amount of computation a single blob can process. The foundation set a goal of increasing the gas limit to 100 million or more.

Meanwhile, the Ethereum Foundation plans to pursue the Glamsterdam and Hegotá upgrades in the first and second halves of this year, respectively. The foundation said the upgrades have clear objectives, including raising the gas limit, embedding PBS (proposer-builder separation) functionality, improving security against quantum computing, and strengthening censorship resistance.
