President Donald Trump said, in response to the Supreme Court ruling invalidating his tariffs, that "I have even stronger tools."

According to Walter Bloomberg, an economic breaking-news account, on the 20th (local time) he said, "I can halt all trade with a country," adding, "It’s also possible to impose an embargo."

He went on to say, "I can take almost any action I want, but (because of the current ruling) I can’t levy money through tariffs."

The remarks came shortly after the Supreme Court determined that the president exceeded his authority by imposing sweeping tariffs without explicit approval from Congress. Trump was seen as pushing back against the decision while signaling the possibility of alternative trade measures.

Attention is now on whether hard-line steps such as halting trade or imposing an embargo will be considered in practice, or whether tariffs will be pursued again on a new legal basis.
