President Donald Trump mentioned a plan to impose 10% global tariffs for about five months.
According to Walter Bloomberg, an economic breaking-news account, on the 20th (local time), he claimed, "I have the right to impose tariffs, and I have always had that right," reiterating his tariff authority despite a recent Supreme Court ruling.
He also raised the issue of selecting the next Fed chair, saying, "Interest rates need to come down significantly." He went on to criticise, "We have a very incompetent Fed chair, and he likes high interest rates."
As Trump continues to make hardline remarks on tariff and monetary policy, speculation is growing that questions over whether trade policy will be pushed again and renewed controversy over the Fed’s independence could come back into focus.
