Coinbase has fully rolled out stock and exchange-traded fund (ETF) trading services for all users in the United States.
According to Cointelegraph on the 24th (local time), Coinbase said it will allow users to trade stocks and ETFs alongside digital assets on its app 24 hours a day, five days a week. Trading fees are waived, and users can buy fractional shares and instantly fund their accounts using either U.S. dollars or Circle’s U.S. dollar stablecoin, USDC.
About 6,000 securities are currently supported, and Coinbase plans to expand the list in the coming weeks. Subject to regulatory approval, Coinbase said it plans to launch perpetual stock futures for non-U.S. users via Coinbase Bermuda. It also plans to offer tokenized stocks in the future.
Brian Armstrong, Coinbase’s chief executive officer (CEO), emphasized on X that “exchanges that trade everything are growing.”
Tokenized stocks are blockchain-based assets that represent traditional equities. In June last year, more than 60 tokenized stocks were listed on Kraken, Bybit and Solana-based DeFi platforms. Robinhood added 80 more names on the Arbitrum blockchain in October, bringing its total offering to 493 tokenized assets.
Traditional exchanges are also entering the market. Nasdaq submitted an application to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in September to list tokenized stocks. The New York Stock Exchange and its parent, Intercontinental Exchange, announced in January plans to develop a platform that enables 24-hour trading and instant settlement of tokenized stocks and ETFs.
Coinbase also announced a partnership with Yahoo Finance on the day. Users will be able to view their assets on Yahoo Finance and execute trades on Coinbase with a single click. Yahoo Finance will integrate Coinbase’s real-time data.
Coinbase One members can earn rewards on USDC balances used for trading, and Yahoo Finance users will receive a one-month trial of Coinbase One Basic.
