Police have arrested a group accused of leaking bitcoin (BTC) seized by Gangnam Police Station to the outside.
The Cyber Investigation Division of the Gyeonggi Northern Provincial Police Agency said on the 25th that it has arrested and is questioning two suspects who allegedly leaked bitcoin being kept at Seoul’s Gangnam Police Station. Police said they are "currently investigating how the virtual assets were leaked," adding that they "plan to disclose the results of the investigation in stages."
Gangnam Police Station recently discovered that 22 bitcoins, voluntarily submitted around November 2021 in connection with a crime, had been leaked externally. The cold wallet in the form of a portable electronic device (USB) remained intact, but only the bitcoin stored inside was reportedly missing.
The leak came to light as the National Police Agency was reviewing the status of virtual assets managed by frontline police stations after it was revealed last month that 320 bitcoins seized and kept by the Gwangju District Prosecutors’ Office had gone missing.
