A US court has ordered the government to file an official response within two weeks regarding FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF)’s request for a new trial.
According to crypto-focused media outlet Cointelegraph on the 26th (local time), the US District Court for the Southern District of New York required prosecutors to submit their position on the motion for a new trial by March 11 (local time).
Earlier this month, SBF filed the motion, saying newly obtained testimony could materially affect the court’s assessment of the case. He claims there is evidence that was not sufficiently considered during the original proceedings.
Previously, in the first trial SBF was sentenced to 25 years in prison and ordered to forfeit $11.02 billion, though that ruling has since been vacated on appeal. The government’s response to the new-trial request is expected to be a key variable in the next steps of the proceedings.
