U.S. President Donald Trump described Cuba as a “failed state” and raised the possibility of an “amicable takeover.”
Speaking to reporters at the White House on the 27th (local time), Trump said, “The Cuban government is talking to us,” adding, “Maybe we will take Cuba over amicably.”
He also said, “Cuba is, to put it nicely, a ‘failed state,’” adding that it is “in serious difficulty right now, and they want help.”
Trump’s remarks come as the United States has recently ramped up pressure on Cuba. After capturing Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on the 3rd of last month and transferring him to the United States, Washington blocked exports of Venezuelan oil to Cuba.
On the 29th of last month, Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on countries that trade oil with Cuba, saying Cuba poses a threat to U.S. national security.
After Cuba was plunged into an acute economic and energy crunch, the Trump administration on the 25th partially eased embargo measures against Cuba, allowing Venezuelan oil to be sold to the country.
