Police have launched an investigation into a case in which the National Tax Service (NTS) had coins seized and stolen.
On the 28th, the National Police Agency’s Cyber Terror Response Division said it had received a request for investigation from the NTS the previous day and begun a pre-indictment inquiry (preliminary probe) into the case.
Earlier, on the 26th, the NTS distributed a press release promoting efforts to collect delinquent taxes and disclosed a photo of a “mnemonic” used as the master key for a virtual-asset cold wallet. After that, claims emerged that $4.8 million worth of virtual assets—about 6.9 billion won—had been stolen.
Police said, “Given the seriousness of the matter, we began a preliminary probe immediately upon receipt,” adding, “We will proceed with the investigation swiftly.”
