The stability of Iran’s system is seen as hinging on who succeeds Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in U.S. and Israeli airstrikes.
According to Iranian government officials and other sources on the 2nd, Iran’s constitution vests the power to choose the Supreme Leader in the Assembly of Experts, a body of 88 clerics. The Supreme Leader is elected with the approval of a majority of incumbent members. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on the 1st (local time) that “a new Supreme Leader will be chosen within a day or two.”
The Iranian government activated an “interim leadership council,” composed of the president and the head of the judiciary, immediately after confirming Khamenei’s death. Potential successors being mentioned include Ali Larijani, secretary-general of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC); Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, head of the judiciary; and Mojtaba Khamenei.
