Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the body charged with selecting the country’s supreme leader, has chosen Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, as the next supreme leader.
Reuters and AFP reported on the 8th (local time) that the Assembly of Experts convened an extraordinary session and appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In a statement, the Assembly of Experts said, "After careful and extensive deliberation, we selected Mojtaba Khamenei as supreme leader through a decisive vote by representatives at the extraordinary session."
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei was killed on the 28th of last month in U.S. and Israeli airstrikes. Since then, Iran’s Assembly of Experts, the constitutional body that selects the supreme leader, has been convened to discuss the succession.
Mojtaba Khamenei, 56, is seen as a figure who has operated at the core of power on the back of his father’s influence. He is known to wield strong influence within Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the intelligence services, and has long been mentioned as a leading contender for the succession.
