As the war between the United States and Israel and Iran entered its 12th day, a series of incidents involving attacks on cargo ships occurred in Middle Eastern waters.

According to overseas media including CNBC in the U.S. on the 11th (local time), the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said three cargo ships were attacked by projectiles fired from Iran’s coast. One of the three was reportedly attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic chokepoint.

Crew members aboard the vessels were said to be evacuating. UKMTO said, "All crew are reported safe."

The Strait of Hormuz is a key trade route through which about 20% of the world’s crude oil passes. Iran has recently sought to block the strait following U.S.-Israeli airstrikes, saying it would "not export a single drop of oil." Iran also laid mines in the Strait of Hormuz.

In response, the U.S., acting on President Donald Trump’s orders, moved to stop Iran by striking mine-laying vessels and mine storage facilities. Earlier, on the 9th, Trump said he was "considering taking control of the Strait of Hormuz," also signaling the possibility of further military involvement.
