Tensions in the Middle East are escalating further after Iran launched missile and drone attacks against the United Arab Emirates (UAE). On the ground, emergency measures are continuing, including the suspension of flights and controls on key roads.
According to BeInCrypto, a cryptocurrency-focused outlet, on the 16th the UAE Ministry of Defence confirmed that Iran had fired ballistic missiles, drones and loitering munitions at the UAE.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on the day, the UAE Ministry of Defence said, "The UAE air defence system is currently intercepting missiles and drones launched from Iran, and the explosion sounds heard in some areas occurred during the process of the air defence system intercepting ballistic missiles and fighter jets intercepting drones and loitering munitions."
Security measures in Dubai were also tightened. Dubai Police closed major intersections near Cargo Village and Marrakech Street and controlled traffic around the airport. Authorities advised drivers to use detours.
Air operations were also disrupted. Recently, Emirates Airlines temporarily suspended all flights departing from and arriving in Dubai, and instructed passengers to refrain from approaching the airport.
There is also speculation that the attack could affect Dubai’s standing as a global business and crypto-asset hub.
In fact, TOKEN2049 Dubai, a major event in the crypto-asset industry, has already postponed its schedule to April next year, citing safety concerns and uncertainty.
