U.S. President Donald Trump said striking oil facilities on Iran’s Kharg Island, a key hub for the country’s crude exports, remains an option.
According to Walter Bloomberg on the 16th (local time), Trump said the U.S. in earlier attacks hit only military facilities on the island and avoided energy infrastructure, but is not ruling out the possibility of targeting oil facilities depending on how the situation develops.
He warned in particular that the U.S. response could change if Iran disrupts shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Kharg Island is known as a critical export hub handling about 90% of Iran’s crude exports. With much of the export volume headed to China, analysts say an attack on the facilities could push up global oil prices and intensify inflationary pressures.
Trump also said the U.S. military destroyed Iranian vessels laying mines to secure shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait is a strategic maritime corridor through which about 20% of the world’s energy supply passes.
