China said it is in discussions with the United States regarding a request to postpone the schedule for a U.S.-China leaders’ summit.
Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a regular briefing on the 17th that “both sides, China and the United States, have maintained communication regarding President Trump’s visit to China.” Asked when the request was received and what the revised schedule might be, he added, “At this time, there is no additional information we can provide,” declining to elaborate. On President Trump’s linking of a request to dispatch warships to the Strait of Hormuz with postponing the China visit, he drew a clear line, saying, “The visit is unrelated to the issue of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
Earlier, President Trump said on the 16th (local time) that he had asked China to delay by about a month his planned visit to China, which had been scheduled for late this month through early next month. He explained, “I want to visit China, but because of the war, I want to be here and I have to be here.”
