Bitrefill, a Lightning Network-based prepaid payments service provider, appears to have been targeted in an attack believed to be carried out by a North Korean hacking group.

In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) on the 17th (local time), Bitrefill said it suffered a cyberattack on March 1 (local time).

The company said that its analysis of the attack method, malware used and IP addresses found the incident showed patterns similar to past attacks linked to Lazarus and BlueNoroff, North Korea-affiliated hacking groups.

So far, however, there are no indications that customer data was leaked, and the system was reportedly switched entirely offline as part of the security response.

Bitrefill said it plans to step up security measures based on the results of further investigations.
