The U.S. state of Arizona has moved to file a criminal complaint against prediction-market platform Kalshi.
According to cryptocurrency-focused outlet CoinDesk on the 17th (local time), Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes said Kalshi was charged with a total of 20 counts, alleging it operated an unlicensed gambling business and offered illegal election betting within the state.
“Kalshi calls itself a prediction market, but in reality it is running an illegal gambling operation and taking bets on elections,” he said, adding that “all of this is prohibited under Arizona law.”
The transactions at issue reportedly included contract-style bets on the outcomes of the 2028 U.S. presidential election and the 2026 gubernatorial election.
The move is seen as re-spotlighting debate over where the line is drawn between prediction markets and gambling, as well as regulatory issues surrounding election-related financial products.
