Global fintech company Stripe has launched the mainnet for its layer-1 blockchain, 'Tempo'.
Tempo said via its official website on the 18th (local time) that it has launched the mainnet. Tempo is a stablecoin-only layer-1 blockchain co-developed by Stripe and crypto venture capital (VC) firm Paradigm. Tempo said, "Tempo is infrastructure for real-world payments," adding that it was "designed with goals including instant payment finality, predictably low fees, high throughput, and global availability."
Tempo also unveiled the Machine Payment Protocol (MPP) the same day. MPP is a technical standard for artificial intelligence (AI) agent payments. Tempo said, "As AI agents’ capabilities expand, the need for them to execute transactions on their own also grows," adding that "MPP was designed to be scalable and not tied to any specific payment method."
Global payments company Visa is known to have already implemented MPP on its network. Stripe has also applied MPP to its platform. A Tempo official said, "With MPP, agents can autonomously pay for services," adding that "MPP is designed to be agnostic to payment methods and networks."
