The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a recruitment drive for experts to build a digital euro payment system.

According to CoinDesk, a media outlet specializing in virtual assets (cryptocurrencies), the ECB is looking for specialists to help draft rules for enabling the digital euro to work with ATMs and card payment terminals (POS).

These experts will be tasked with defining technical standards for how ATM and POS terminals process digital euro payments. This includes device connectivity methods, support for offline payments, and compatibility with existing payment standards.

The ECB’s goal is to build an integrated payment environment that allows users across the euro area to use the digital euro for in-store purchases or withdraw it from cash machines.

The move is seen as a sign that infrastructure preparations for introducing a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in Europe are moving into full gear.
