The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched a recruitment drive for experts to build a digital euro payments system.
According to CoinDesk, a virtual-asset (cryptocurrency) industry outlet, on the 19th (local time) the ECB is looking for specialists to help draft rules for enabling the digital euro to work with ATMs and card point-of-sale (POS) terminals.
These experts will be tasked with defining technical standards for how ATM and POS terminals process digital euro payments. This includes device connectivity, offline payment support, and compatibility with existing payment standards.
The ECB’s goal is to create an integrated payments environment that allows users across the eurozone to pay in stores with the digital euro or withdraw it from cash machines.
The move is seen as a signal that preparations for the infrastructure needed to introduce a central bank digital currency (CBDC) in Europe are moving into full swing.
