The United States has decided to temporarily halt a military strike on Iran’s energy infrastructure. With talks between the two countries under way, markets appear to be partially pricing in expectations of easing geopolitical tensions.

According to CNBC on the 23rd, President Donald Trump said he would delay for five days a military strike targeting power plants and energy infrastructure, citing “very good and productive talks” with Iran. The remarks were reaffirmed in a CNBC interview after he had earlier posted the same stance on Truth Social.

In both the Truth Social post and the CNBC interview, Trump said “discussions are under way to fully resolve hostilities in the Middle East,” adding that “the dialogue will continue through this week.” He also said he hoped “a substantive agreement can be reached.”

The move marks a shift from his earlier hardline posture, when he demanded that Iran keep the Strait of Hormuz open and set a 48-hour deadline. However, Trump also said the situation could be viewed as “regime change,” indicating he has not fully ruled out military options.

Markets reacted immediately. After the news broke, international oil prices plunged, with volatility increasing.

Meanwhile, investors are watching whether the direction of developments in the Middle East could become a key variable, as military tensions and diplomatic negotiations proceed in parallel.
