Reports say the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is moving to build a blockchain-based platform for trading tokenized securities.

According to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on the 24th, the NYSE is developing a tokenized securities trading platform in partnership with Securitize. The platform will be built as a separate trading system called the “Digital Trading Platform,” and aims for a structure in which securities in token form are issued and trading and settlement are processed on a blockchain.

Securitize will participate as the NYSE’s first digital transfer agent, taking on the role of issuing and managing shares and exchange-traded fund (ETF) interests in the form of blockchain-based tokens. The two companies also plan to jointly establish standards for token issuance and management that meet regulatory requirements.

Through this, the NYSE is designing the platform to offer 24-hour trading and an instant-settlement environment, while also enabling the use of stablecoins as trading funds.

Carlos Domingo, co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Securitize, said, “Tokenized stocks in today’s market are not tokenized versions of actual shares, but are closer to derivatives or price-tracking products,” adding that “this project aims to work with issuers to implement ‘native tokenization.’”

Meanwhile, the market is increasingly viewing asset tokenization as potentially reshaping the structure of traditional financial markets as major exchanges such as the NYSE and Nasdaq move to build tokenized securities infrastructure.
