Reports say Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, has urged President Donald Trump to continue military operations against Iran. Markets are increasingly seeing the Middle East situation as unlikely to ease in the near term.

According to The New York Times on the 24th, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman recently told President Trump in a phone call that military operations against Iran should be kept going.

The newspaper said the crown prince views the operation as a “historic opportunity to reshape the Middle East.”

He also reportedly described Iran’s regime as a long-term threat, conveying the view that “the threat will be difficult to eliminate without removing the current system.”

Saudi authorities, however, drew a line against interpretations that Riyadh officially supports a prolonged war. Saudi officials said, “We have supported a peaceful solution since before the conflict began,” adding that “our position remains unchanged.”

Meanwhile, markets are warning that a prolonged Middle East war would likely amplify volatility in energy markets and global financial markets.
