The Pentagon is reportedly considering large-scale military operations against Iran, including the deployment of ground forces.
Axios, a U.S. political news outlet, reported on 26 (local time), citing U.S. government officials, that “the Pentagon is reviewing large-scale military options for a ‘final blow’ against Iran.” Axios added that “the operation could include the deployment of ground troops and a large-scale bombing campaign.”
The Pentagon is also said to be weighing an invasion of or blockade of Kharg Island, a major hub for Iran’s crude oil exports, as part of the “final blow.” Axios said an option also includes invading Larak Island, which plays a key role in Iran’s efforts to strengthen control over the Strait of Hormuz, adding that “this strategic outpost is equipped with attack boats capable of blowing up cargo ships, bunkers, and radar systems monitoring movements in the strait.”
Axios reported that the Pentagon is also considering blocking or seizing vessels exporting Iranian crude east of the Strait of Hormuz. According to Axios, the U.S. military has also drawn up plans for ground operations in Iran’s interior to secure highly enriched uranium buried underground at Iran’s nuclear facilities.
However, U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly not yet selected any of the Pentagon’s options. Axios said “White House officials described the possibility of a potential ground operation as ‘hypothetical,’” adding that “Trump has warned he could act on his previous threat to bomb Iran’s power plants and energy facilities.”
Axios also forecast that within the next few days, additional reinforcements—including thousands of troops—could arrive in the Middle East. Axios said “a Marine expeditionary unit is scheduled to arrive (in the Middle East) this week,” adding that “another expeditionary unit is currently deploying.” Earlier, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the previous day (25), “Iran must never miscalculate again,” adding, “All violence that unfolds going forward will be the result of Iran refusing to negotiate.”
