A report said concerns are spreading among senior officials in the U.K. and Europe that the United States could sever ties with its NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) allies and align with Russia.
On the 27th (local time), The Times cited a report by the U.K. Parliament’s Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy (JCNSS), saying it noted that in a “worst-case scenario” Europe could be forced to fight alone without U.S. help. The report recommended that the U.K. maintain cooperation with the United States while moving to reduce its reliance on Washington in defense and security.
U.S. President Donald Trump, speaking in Miami the same day, publicly vented his dissatisfaction with NATO, which has effectively refused to dispatch warships to the Strait of Hormuz.
“It was a tremendous mistake that NATO didn’t help us,” Trump said. “We’ve always been there for them, but now, judging by what they’ve done, it seems we may not need to be.” He also proposed a new “beneficiary pays” payment framework for NATO after allies failed to meet his demands.
A European official said, “The United States stepping back from European security is no longer the worst-case scenario. The worst case would be the United States turning hostile toward Europe.”
Support for Ukraine is also wobbling. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the same day that the administration could consider redirecting resources used for supporting Ukraine to the Middle East.
“If something is needed for the United States and it is a U.S. asset, we will keep America first,” Rubio said.
Another report said the Pentagon is reviewing a plan to reassign supplies planned for Ukraine—including air-defense interceptor missiles—to the Middle East.
Tensions between the two countries continue as Rubio rebutted as “a lie” President Volodymyr Zelensky’s remark that the United States is pressuring Ukraine to hand over the entire eastern Donbas region to Russia.
A senior Ukrainian military official said, “Unfortunately, Putin seems to be a bigger friend to Trump.”
