US President Donald Trump said that "the president of Iran’s new regime asked the United States for a ceasefire."
Trump made the remarks on 1 (local time) in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He added, "We (the United States) will consider it if the Strait of Hormuz is opened and secured so that it is free and safe," and said, "Until then, we will completely devastate Iran."
Iran has previously said it is willing to agree to a ceasefire if certain conditions are met. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a phone call the previous day (31) with António Costa, President of the European Council, that "if the necessary conditions are met—especially if guarantees are provided to prevent renewed aggression—we have the will needed to end this conflict."
The necessary conditions Pezeshkian referred to are seen as a reference to five key conditions previously presented to the United States. Late last month, the Iranian government set out five ceasefire conditions: ▲a complete halt to enemy attacks and assassinations ▲the establishment of a concrete mechanism to ensure that war is not imposed ▲guaranteed compensation for war damages, with payment methods clearly defined ▲a complete end to the war, including all fronts in the region and resistance forces ▲international recognition and guarantees of Iran’s sovereign right to exercise authority over the Strait of Hormuz.
