The Iranian government has pushed back against remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump claiming that Iran had asked the United States for a ceasefire.

According to Walter Bloomberg on the 1st (local time), an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that day, “President Trump’s claim that ‘Iran requested a ceasefire’ is false and has no basis.”

Earlier, President Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that “the president of Iran’s new regime requested a ceasefire from the United States.” He added, “We (the United States) will consider it if the Strait of Hormuz is opened and secured in a free and safe manner,” and said, “Until then, we will completely devastate Iran.”

Iran has maintained that it cannot open the Strait of Hormuz. According to Bloomberg, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that day, “The Strait of Hormuz will not be opened to the enemy based on the absurd conduct of the U.S. president.”

Bloomberg assessed that “taken together, the various messages coming out of the United States and Iran make it difficult to pin down how likely a ceasefire is.” It added that “(President Trump) at times toggled between two positions within the same message,” while “Iran is open to ending the war, but only if certain conditions are met.”
