Iran’s government has pushed back against U.S. President Donald Trump’s remarks that “Iran requested a ceasefire from the United States.”

According to Walter Bloomberg on the 1st (local time), an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that day, “President Trump’s claim that ‘Iran requested a ceasefire’ is false and has no basis.”

Earlier, President Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that “the president of Iran’s new regime requested a ceasefire from the United States.” Trump added, “We (the United States) will consider it if the Strait of Hormuz is opened and secured so it can be freely and safely maintained,” and said, “Until then, we will completely devastate Iran.”

Iran continues to maintain that it cannot open the Strait of Hormuz. Bloomberg reported that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said in a statement that day, “The Strait of Hormuz will not be opened to enemies on the basis of the U.S. president’s absurd behavior.”

Bloomberg assessed that “taking together the various messages coming out of the United States and Iran, it is difficult to pin down how likely a ceasefire is.” Bloomberg added that “(President Trump) at times oscillated between two positions within the same message,” while “Iran is open to ending the war, but only if certain conditions are met.”
