French President Emmanuel Macron has called claims that military force should be deployed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “unrealistic.”

According to Bloomberg on the 2nd (local time), speaking to reporters in South Korea during a state visit, Macron said, “Trying to reopen the Strait of Hormuz through military means is unrealistic.” He added, “(Deploying military force) is an option we have never chosen and is unrealistic,” and said, “The strait, which is strategically important for fertilizer, energy and international trade, must be reopened, but that is only possible through consultations with Iran.”

Macron’s remarks are widely seen as having U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments in mind. Earlier, in a national address the previous day (the 1st), Trump said, “Among countries around the world that import oil through the Strait of Hormuz, they should defend it themselves,” adding, “We may be able to help, but countries that depend on the Strait of Hormuz must resolve it on their own.”
