Iran is reportedly allowing passage through the Strait of Hormuz only for vessels transporting essential goods and the like to its own ports.
Iran’s Tasnim News reported this on the 4th (local time), citing relevant documents. According to the report, vessels headed to Iranian ports—including ships located in the Gulf of Oman—must, after prior coordination with Iranian authorities, comply with protocols related to passage through the strait.
The letter, sent on April 1, stated: “In accordance with the agreement and announcement of the powerful Iranian government and the victorious Iranian military, it has been decided to allow passage through the Strait of Hormuz for ships carrying humanitarian goods, especially essential goods, feed, and the like.”
Iran is currently effectively blockading the Strait of Hormuz, a key energy shipping route, amid a state of war that has continued since U.S. and Israeli airstrikes in late February.
