Iran strongly pushed back, labeling U.S. remarks about the possibility of strikes on infrastructure as a war crime.

According to Odaily, a crypto-focused media outlet, on the 6th Esmail Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said that “the very act of making such threats constitutes a war crime,” in response to the U.S. raising the prospect of attacks on energy and industrial infrastructure.

Baghaei claimed that “while the U.S. on the one hand mentions strikes on energy and industrial facilities, it is at the same time effectively condoning Israel’s attacks on civilian targets.” He added that “such actions constitute war crimes under international humanitarian law and the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC).”

He also warned of accountability for countries that cooperate with U.S. military actions. “Any country that cooperates with or supports U.S. actions cannot avoid legal responsibility,” he said, adding that “this may be regarded as war crimes and crimes against humanity.”

Markets are focusing on the possibility that rising tensions in the Middle East could prolong a trend of widening geopolitical risk.
