President Donald Trump said he would pause airstrikes on Iran for two weeks if Tehran fully, immediately and safely reopens the Strait of Hormuz, raising the possibility that the Middle East may move into a negotiating phase.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on June 7 that he had decided to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for two weeks under that condition.

He said the move came at the request of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir. Trump added that he had been asked to hold off military action planned for later that night and described the arrangement as a "double sided ceasefire" applying to both parties.

Trump also said US military objectives had already been met. "We not only achieved all military objectives, we exceeded them," he wrote.

He said talks with Iran had made substantial progress. Trump said he had received a 10-point proposal from Iran that could serve as a practical basis for negotiations and that most major issues had already been agreed.

"The two-week pause is time to complete a final agreement," Trump said. "We are very close to long-term peace in the Middle East."
