Iran said shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has effectively halted, blaming what it called a ceasefire breach.

CNN reported on April 8 that Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said vessel traffic through the strait fell sharply and then effectively stopped after Israel carried out an attack in Lebanon that Tehran described as a violation of the truce.

Ship-tracking data showed no vessels were currently transiting the Strait of Hormuz. Some traffic had resumed after the US and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire, but that movement has stopped again.

Iran maintains that Israel’s attack violated the ceasefire agreement. The White House, however, has said Lebanon is not covered by the truce.

Israel launched large-scale airstrikes on Lebanon that day, and local authorities said the attacks caused heavy casualties.

In a statement, the Revolutionary Guard said the Strait of Hormuz remains under Iran’s control. It said Iranian oil tankers and some Chinese vessels had passed through, but no further ship movements took place afterward.

Some vessels that had been following scheduled routes also turned back, the report said.

The latest developments are renewing uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global crude supply, and could add to volatility in energy markets.
