U.S. Democrats are calling for President Donald Trump’s impeachment over his remarks on Iran.

SFGATE reported on Aug. 8 that Trump stepped up military threats after a deadline related to keeping the Strait of Hormuz open had passed, saying in effect that “one civilization could disappear tonight.”

More than 70 Democratic lawmakers, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, said the president’s comments were excessive and raised questions about his fitness for office.

Pelosi said Congress should act to stop a war if the cabinet does not invoke the 25th Amendment.

Representative Sara Jacobs criticized the remarks as a “threat of genocide” and raised the possibility of impeachment. Representative Eric Swalwell also said Trump should be removed from office, while Representative Ro Khanna called for both impeachment and the invocation of the 25th Amendment.

The criticism was not limited to Democrats. Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene also condemned the remarks, saying the U.S. cannot destroy an entire civilization when the country has not been attacked.

The White House rejected the Democrats’ claims, saying they were part of a political offensive that had been going on for some time.
