Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s top diplomat, sharply condemned Israel’s airstrikes on Lebanon.
In a post on X on June 9, Kallas said hundreds of people were killed overnight in the Israeli strikes. While Hezbollah had dragged Lebanon into the war, Israel’s right to self-defense did not justify destruction on such a scale, she wrote.
Kallas added that Israel’s actions were placing serious strain on the ceasefire between the US and Iran. Any ceasefire with Iran should also apply to Lebanon, she said, adding that the EU supports Lebanon’s efforts to disarm Hezbollah.
Israel launched extensive airstrikes across Lebanon on June 8. The Guardian estimated the strikes killed at least 254 people and wounded 837 on the Lebanese side.
The Israeli military also said on June 9 that it had killed Ali Youssef Harchi in an overnight strike on Beirut. Harchi was the personal secretary and nephew of Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, the military said. It added that he had also served as an adviser to Qassem.
